Course aims
To develop a systemised overview and practical analysis of Estonian morphophonological and morphological methods.
Brief description of the course
An introductory linguistic-typological overview of the grammatical means used in languages (isolating, agglutinative, inflectional languages) and the development mechanisms (grammaticalisation) of various morphological types. An analysis of Estonian morpho(phono)logical methods: systems of suppletion and morphological categories. Classification of Estonian parts of speech and morphological inflectional types. Theoretical introduction to the possibilities and limitations of taxonomic linguistics. Against this background the classification of Estonian parts of speech is presented: inflectional parts of speech - verbs and declinable words, invariable parts of speech. Within the analysis of morphological inflectional types an overview of various classifications (systems by ‹lle Viks, Paul Alvre and Elmar Muuk) is provided.
