Course aims

To provide the basic knowledge on Estonian modern literature and to provide the knowledge about the changes that occured in Estonian literature at the end of the 20th century and in the beginning of the 21st century.

Brief description of the course

The general trends of contemporary Estonian literature and some most important authors of the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s are discussed. The examples of Estonian literature in English translation are read and discussed. Students are required to write an analytical essay about one book of modern Estonian literature.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
The ability to understand and analyse the main trends in Estonian modern literature will be achieved. Students will obtain the knowledge how literay works are related to the wider literary context of the period of their creation. Students will improve their skills to analyse contemporary Estonian literary texts.
