Course aims
Overview of the origins of Estonian language, its development, dialects and influence of other languages on Estonian.
Brief description of the course
Estonian among finno-ugric languages, hypothesises of the origin of Estonian language. Sources of the history of Estonian language: the oldest sources and their creditability. Language of the old folk songs. Estonian dialects. Historic devalopment of the Estonian wocabulary and structure. Influence of other languages on the development of Estonian language. First written documents containing Estonian words.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student has an overview of the theorys of the origins of Estonian language, its early development and influence of other languages on Estonian, Estonian dialects in the development of modern Estonian, Estonian dialects today.
