Course aims
To enable a general understanding of SLA and FLL principle concepts, main theories, approaches and essential research questions, methods and results. To enable understanding and analyzing skills of SLA and FLL processes in the light of previous experience; to enable further successful acquisition of Estonian as L2 didactics.
Brief description of the course
An overview of SLA and FLL main concepts, theories, approaches and essential research questions, methods and results; an overview of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching and assessment (CEFR); analysis of factors affecting SLA and FLL results, learner’s strategies, evaluation of language proficiency, cross-linguistic influence; connections between acquisition theories and teaching methods; possible application of research results in teaching; excursions to bilingual secondary school language classes and classes with Estonian as a language of instruction and to SA Innove (language centre, immersion education centre and curriculum and examination centre).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The students have knowledge of essential concepts in SLA and FLL, main theoretical approaches and research questions, methods and results; skills to draw connections between theoretical concepts and experience of language learning/teaching; skills to use acquired knowledge for development of individual language skills and language learning and to conduct research in SLA field; basis for further studies in teacher training MA programs.
