Course aims

Introduction to Estonian lexicology, fraseology and word formation system, enrichment of vocabulary through practical work.

Brief description of the course

Branches of lexicology, terminology. Social layers of vocabulary and it’ s enrichment. Word meaning and changes in word meaning: polysemy, word compounds, Fraseology it’ s origin and different classifications. Introduction to Estonian word formation system. Connections between word meaning and structure. Derivation: terminology, meaning groups of suffixes. Derivation and word classes. Compound words, meaning and stem changes in compound words. Compound word and word compound and their ortography problems.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
Student orientates in terminology, is able to illustrate theoretical matherial with excamples, use their theoretical knowledge in practice.
