Course aims

Goal: 1. To provide a glimpse of directons of specialty studies, bases and methods of research work, bibliographic issues and possibilities of information search; 2. To develop the skills of perfecting reviews and written works

Brief description of the course

1. Avenues and subject matter of specialty studies. Forms of instruction, anticipated outcomes of studies. The Estonian language and the research direction of contrastive linguistics as an essential aspect of specialty studies and the study of language. Applied linguistics and corpus studies. Possibilities and perspectives of quantitative analysis of the language use. Qualitative analysis of the language use. Utility grammar as a support to the study of language.
2. Periodical issues in specialty, bibliographies, archival collections, language corpuses, research centres and research avenues of the Estonian language, important WEB-addresses. Information system of libraries.
3. Types of scientific texts, manners of presentation of information. Perfecting independent written works (conspectus (notes), abstract, record of lectures).

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
1.Student will read articles in linguistics, he/she will be able to pinpoint the research problem, describe the stages and methods of its solution, while commenting on the result obtained and the build-up of articles.
2. Student will use the libraries’ information system, he/she will carry out different information search in the Internet.
3. Student can review and quote, he/she will know the requirements to perfecting scientific works and can put them in practice.
