Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of the most important events and stages of development in Finnish history.
The main topics include: the prehistory of Finland; the Christianization of Finland; the Reformation; Agricola and the development of the written Finnish language; the Great Northern War and its impact on Finland; Elias Lönnrot and the Kalevala; Finland as part of the Russian Empire; the emergence of national consciousness and National Romanticism; the Diet of Finland; independence and the Finnish Civil War; Finland in the wars of 1939–1945; Väinö Linna’s Tuntematon sotilas and Täällä Pohjantähden alla; the Cold War era; diversification in literature; contemporary Finland and Finnish society; the history and contemporary development of Finnish music.
This Finnish-language course supports language acquisition at B2 level and helps to expand vocabulary relating to history and culture.
