Course aims
To learn and analyze the most important stages and development of Finnish history from prehistory to the present day and to get acquainted with Finnish literature and culture. Support and development of Finnish language skills.
Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of the most important events and stages in the development of Finnish history. The main topics are: Finland's prehistory, the Christianization of Finland, the Reformation, Agricola and the emergence of the written language, the Great Northern War and its impact on Finland, Elias Lönrot and the Kalevala, Finland as part of Russia, the birth of national consciousness and national romanticism, the Great Famine, the Land Days, Independence and the Civil War, the Finnish wars (1939-45), Väinö Linna's The Unknown Soldier and Under the Northern Star, the Cold War era, literary diversification, modern Finland and Finnish society, the history of Finnish music and the modern era. The course will support language acquisition at B2 level and the development of vocabulary on history and culture as the course is in Finnish.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has comprehensive knowledge of Finnish history, society, culture and literature;
- can link professional knowledge to a broader general cultural and societal context;
- is able to use the acquired knowledge purposefully in independent research;
- has expanded its cultural, historical and literary vocabulary.
