Course aims
The main objective of the elective course Integrated Skills is the further deepening of the oral expression skills of Finnish language for communicating in various areas of social life through the acquisition of the basic concepts and terminology of Tallinn's medieval architecture and urban culture of the area. In addition to the vocabulary on the culture and the history of the medieval city, the course will provide the skills necessary to deal with the different communicative situations (presentation, city tours, etc.). Acquisition of the oral expression skills takes place in the form of presentations, conversations, discussions and city tour in Finnish.
Brief description of the course
Overview in geography and history. Tallinn as the administrative, economic and cultural center of Estonia. Hanseatic City Tallinn and the Lübeck law. Medieval trade, merchants, guilds and markets. Medieval crafts, artisans and guilds. Town Hall Square, Town Hall, aldermen, Town Hall Pharmacy and druggists.Tallinn’s down-town churches and medieval poor houses. Tallinn's medieval town citizens and their municipal buildings. Tallinn city walls, gates and towers. Toompea, the Toompea churches, castle and knighthood.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
In-depth knowledge of the Finnish language vocabulary and phrases of the city's cultural sphere and its architecture; the ability to speak about Tallinn’s history and its historical sightseeings.
