Course aims
To provide a theoretical overview of the historical development of modern Finnish and its local and social dialects. To present common comparative and historical features in varieties of Finnish and other Baltic-Finnic languages. To form a picture of the role of the Finnish language in the European Union.
Brief description of the course
Different periods of the history of the Finnish language. The history of the grammar and written language. Theories about the ethnogenesis of the Baltic-Finnic languages. Genuine and borrowed elements in the grammatical structure and vocabulary of modern Finnish. A historical overview of the grammatical structure of Finnish. Main noun and verb categories in modern Finnish and their historical development. Classification of Finnish local dialects, their main phonetic and morphological features. The first Finnish written sources. The periods in the history of the Finnish written language. The Finnish language in the 12th -14th centuries. Finnish written language in the 15th -16th centuries. Reformation in Finland. M. Agricola. Finnish as an object of research in the 16th -17th centuries (the first grammars, vocabularies).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student has knowledge of the Finnish language and literary history.
