Course aims
- to introduce students to main concepts of language policy, language ideology, and language identity;
- to present language policies in different regions of Eastern Europe in connection with historical events and social processes;
- to discuss the issues of imperialism, colonialism and nationalism in application to languages and identities of East European peoples.
Brief description of the course
The course deals with various aspects of language policy and relations between language and state in Eastern Europe in historical perspective. It focuses on state efforts to control languages and people speaking them, to achieve certain political and ideological goals, and on grass-root opposition to such state policies. The course is structured chronologically and geographically: for every historical period, data from several geopolitical regions is presented. Apart from official regulations and language related activities, issues of political discourse, language and power, and ideology and propaganda are discussed.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired a general understanding of key sociolinguistic concepts, is familiar with major events and processes in Eastern European countries from the 19th to 21st century, and relates them to language and identity issues;
- solves subject-related problems by critically analyzing language ideologies and attempts to control language use, and argues for their positions with evidence-based reasoning;
- applies acquired knowledge and skills sustainably and strategically, demonstrating creativity and responsibility while taking into account social processes and future directions of the field;
- is able to interpret the connections between language and identity in different social contexts and to continue professional development;
- assesses their own and others’ developmental needs and supports others’ learning through discussions or feedback.
