Course aims
The course aims:
- to discuss major trends in the humanities;
- to illuminate both the specificity of Eastern Europe as a research area and its connection with the "Western" and global issues;
- to demonstrate how theoretical concepts and frameworks can be applied in practice;
- to familiarize students with the tools of interdisciplinary analysis;
- to nurture a holistic understanding of the region.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of several study blocks that explore the current trends in the humanities research in connection to EES. Those may include questions of nationalism and identity, transnationalism and migration studies, post- and decolonial studies, gender and queer studies, environmental studies, visual studies. It builds on what the students have learned in the general course Key Concepts in Cultural Analysis and demonstrates how these theories can be applied to the specific case studies.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands how critical paradigms in the humanities have changed over time and relates them to broader scientific and societal transformations;
- is familiar with current issues in the field and connects them to developments in recent history;
- uses theoretical and methodological tools in analyzing historical and contemporary social processes in Eastern Europe;
- applies critical thinking and argumentation skills in seminars and discussions, either individually or in teamwork;
- is able to solve both subject-specific and interdisciplinary problems, apply knowledge strategically and creatively, and support peers’ development in academic discussions and collaboration.
