Course aims
To provide a general overview on the history and culture of the Baltic countries.
Brief description of the course
A gernearl overview of the history. Grand Dutchy of Lithuania. Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. Conquest of Latvia by crusaders, German and Swedish domination. Baltic peoples in Russian Empire. Birth of modern Latvian and Lithuanian nation and culture. Russification. Independent states (1918-1940). Minorities in Latvia and Lithuania. Soviet and Nazi occupation. National communism and resistence. Baltic republics as Soviet West. Baltic cities: Riga, Vilnius, Kaunas. Regaining of independence.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge of the basic fact of the history of Latvia and Lithuania; ability to understand the main events and actors; understanding of national awakening and modern nationalism formation; knowledge of important cultural trends.
