Brief description of the course
An overview of the disciplines of translation and their basic concept (the essence and function of translating in society, interpreter/translators and their role in the translating process, oral written and machine translation and other types of translations, translating fiction, different translating methods, linguistic philosophy in translation theory, equivalency (i.e. adequacy of translation), translation norms, objective of translation or skopos etc.). A brief overview of European and Estonian translation history through the ages (ancient Greece and Rome, the Arab-Latin of the Middle Ages, translating of the Bible throughout history, belles infidels in eighteenth century France, German classical era of the nineteenth century, translation history of the twentieth century, well-known translators and their translation methods through the ages).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student knows main concepts of translation theory, has an overview dicipline of translation theory and is able to explain the functions of it. Knows main well-known translators and their translation methods. Reads the modern translation criticism. Is able to make simple translation analyse. Understand the importance of translation in culture. Present its analytical findings orally and in writing form.
