Course aims
The objective of the subject is to analyze Estonian literature from its beginning up to now. Besides the review lectures there will be the individual work with texts and their analysis and interpretation during the seminars.
Brief description of the course
Artistic individuality of runic verse. Old and modern folk song. Review of chronicle and church literature, reformation and bible translation. Enlightenment and the activity of estophiles. The life and creation of K. J. Peterson. The activity of Faehlmann and Kreutzwald in creating Estonian ethnoliterature: Mythical folktales, Kalevipoeg. Ethnoromantism of the Age of Awakening. The journalistic and literal activity of Jannsen, Koidula and Jakobson. The poetry of J. Liiv and A. Haava. G. Suits and Noor-Eesti. Short stories of F. Tuglas. Modern tendencies at the beginning of the 20th century. Siuru. Tarapita. The authors of short stories of the 1920s. Realism and and criticism of society. The realism of slurs. Arbujas. The novel of the 1930s. The events of years 1940.–1941. Division into exile and homeland Estonian literature. Sociorealism. J. Smuul as a poet and a proseist.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
At the beginning of the course students will have an overview of the basic directions of the Estonian literature and of terms from the beginning up to now. Students will have improved the skill of analyzing fiction from different ages.
