Course aims
Core subject of Estonian philology. The objective of the course is to provide an overview of the development and processes of Estonian folklore. The emergence of folkloristics as a science and its position in the system of philological disciplines. The classification of folklore, its composition and components, relationships between folklore and other contemporary arts.
Brief description of the course
Folklore regions, their general description and differences. The development of the oral heritage of a nation. Sources of folklore. Collecting folklore. The process of folklore. Folklore as a syncretic art. The classification of folklore, its composition and components. The concept and contents of folk belief and its development over the centuries. Reflections of folklore in different folklore classifications. Musical folklore. Contemporary folklore. Folklore and pedagogy. Folklore and ideology. Folklore and folkloristics. The support and related sciences of folkloristics.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The students are familiar with folklore genres and genre specifics, are able to understand the connections between folklore and contemporary culture and arts.
