Course aims
To provide knowledge of the earliest period in Estonian literature, its development from the first landmarks through Baltic-German literature for Estonians to the very first original creative works. The period of National Awakening and the twentieth century literary group Noor-Eesti, which embodies the development processes of Estonian literature. The course concludes with the treatment of the activities of the Siuru literary group .
Brief description of the course
The course starts with the first literary landmarks in Estonia. The start of clerical literature, the Reformation, the Swedish period in Estonian literary history. Particular attention is paid to H. Stahl, sermons and occasional poetry. Translating the Bible provided the basis for the development of Estonian literary language. The Enlightenment literature of the 18th -19th centuries, pre-romanticism and sentimental literature are covered. K.J. Peterson, F. R. Faehlmann and F. R. Kreutzwald are studied as outstanding figures of the period. In addition to background information about the National Awakening, J. V. Jannsen and L. Koidula are focused upon. An overview of socio-cultural trends at the end of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century is given. The Noor-Eesti (G. Suits, F. Tuglas) and Siuru (M. Under, H. Visnapuu) literary groups are studied.
