Course aims
Provide students with systematically organized and contemporary knowledge of Estonian literature from the poetry renewal of the late 1950s to the first quarter of the 21st century. Develop students' ability to work independently with literary texts from this period and to analyze these texts acadamically.
Brief description of the course
The issues of Estonian literature in the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century: social context, periodization, literature and it connections with various ideologies. Estonian literature in the 1950s, the poetic renewal from the end of the 1950s, literary changes in the 1960s in poetry, prose, and drama. Estonian literature in exile. Estonian literature in the 1970s and 1980s. Estonian restoration of independence and the literary turn of the 1990s. The main trends in 21st-century Estonian literature – contemporary poetry and prose, contemporary drama, digital literature, etc. The main literary concepts associated with this period will be discussed, such as realism, socialist realism, modernism, and postmodernism, etc. In the seminars key works of the period will be academically analyzed and linked to the context of the era. The list of literary works to be covered during the course will be specified at the beginning of the course.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has acquired in-depth and systematic knowledge of the developments in Estonian literature in the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century, including key authors and works of the period;
- is able to analyze and interpret literary works from the period, taking into account both the literary canon and the social and historical context;
- has acquired knowledge of literary concepts related to the period and is able to apply them in the analysis of literary texts;
- is capable of working independently with diverse literary texts, applying acquired knowledge and skills for in-depth analysis of Estonian literature.
