Course aims
Develop the skills to 1) review media, cultural, political, and economic texts in Estonian and English, 2) recognize the distinctive features of various English text genres and compare them with the corresponding genres in Estonian; 3) be aware of the principles of text organization, modes of discourse, and their connection to text structure, subjectivity as a characteristic of a text, and its various manifestations in texts; 4) use different databases, translation solutions and electronic resources; 5) create coherent, fluent, and concise texts.
Brief description of the course
The objectives and process of reviewing. Terminology issues and their solutions. Support resources and databases. Translation programs. Key concepts in discourse and genre analysis, which form the theoretical foundation for comparative analysis of various types of English and Estonian texts; the structural specifics of media, political, and economic texts in English and Estonian, manifestations of subjectivity in texts. Language features specific to different text types (constructions, vocabulary, etc.), highlighting key information, such as detecting text bias. Skills in creating coherent and linguistically fluent texts in Estonian.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- review media, cultural, political, and economic texts in both Estonian and English;
- recognize genre-specific features of English texts and compare them with corresponding features in Estonian;
- structure texts logically;
- identify subjectivity in texts;
- utilize various types of data sources and translation aids;
- create coherent, fluent, and comprehensive text.
