Brief description of the course
The course covers information retrieval, databases, source evaluation and the principles of summarising and paraphrasing. Students learn to identify relevant information, present it accurately, use citation conventions correctly and apply terminology appropriately. The course also introduces the preparation of public-facing summaries and develops skills in evaluating and improving summary texts.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- uses databases and different types of information sources effectively, critically evaluates the reliability and suitability of information sources and AI-generated content for summarising and reporting purposes;
- applies the principles of summarising and paraphrasing to Estonian- and English-language texts;
- understands the principles of terminology and uses terms accurately;
- follows citation conventions and avoids plagiarism;
- produces summaries and reports appropriate to purpose, audience and communication channel,analyses and evaluates their own and their peers’ summaries using reasoned argumentation;
- reflects on the development of their information retrieval and summarising skills.
