Course aims
To provide the knowledge and skills on different aspects of managing a small business in Estonia in current legal and regulatory environment.
Brief description of the course
The course helps the student to create a company structure, set up an accounting system and financial schemes to extract sufficient working capital, and formulate a sustainable competitive advantage. The student learns to create short and long-term plans for the enterprise, to examine relevent labor laws for hiring and developing an appropriate staff, to organize its resources efficiently and effectively, to follow rules and regulations to prepare and file in proper documents, and to control the operations of the organization. The student learns to identify potential risk areas, and the importance of development and exit strategies.

Upon completing the course the student:

Discuss the availability of the entrepreneurial opportunities;
Discuss the factors that make the small business unique;
Understand the franchising concept and practices;
Understand the rational behind starting a new business rather than buying an existing firms or acquiring a franchise;
Define competitive advantage;
Identify the factors affecting choice of business location;
Learn how to hire and train employees in compliance with Estonian labor laws;
Understand different resource needs and requirements;
Identify internal control issues and proper documentation rules;
Understand the impact of social responsibilities on small businesses;
Discuss the distinctive features of small business management;
Understand the importance of information technology for small businesses;
Identify the working-capital cycle of a small business;
Define the nature of risk and how to mitigate it;
Define the development and exit strategies and explain their importance.
