Course aims
This course will help teachers understand the tradeoffs in the use of learning games in a second language acquisition classroom and how to select the appropriate games and activities for their contexts. Through engaging with different types of learning games they will learn to adapt games for their classrooms that are pedagogically sound while being engaging and interactive for the students.
Brief description of the course
Games as a pedagogical tool in language teaching. Critical review of quiz-based activities and their limitations. Practice games for practicing pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Conceptual transfer games for generating genuine communication: information-gap tasks, discussion games, collaborative puzzles, and role-play scenarios. Game design and adaptation for specific learning outcomes and proficiency levels. Practical considerations: managing mixed-ability groups, online and hybrid settings, learner motivation, and integration into broader course design.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- describes and classifies the different types of language learning games and uses them in the classroom;
- judges the quality of a language learning game;
