Course aims
Academic writing is an essential skill for anyone engaged in Masters level work. This course provides students with the necessary skills to communicate their ideas clearly.
Brief description of the course
This course is a practical, hands-on course. Students will be expected to complete structured assignments in both reading and writing. These assignments will build the reading and writing skills needed for master’s level students. Students will learn to read and critique both published work and their colleagues’ submissions.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- skims and scans an academic paper for its meaning;
- writes concise notes based on the readings they have done;
- uses a reference management tool (e.g., Zotero);
- constructs an outline plan for an academic assignment;
- understands the purpose of referencing academic works and knows how to apply proper citation methods;
- writes clear and well-structured paragraphs.
