Course aims
The course will provide students with
• knowledge and understanding of theories, models and best practices for developing digital libraries;
• a methodological framework to consider user needs, expectations and perceptions needed to develop critical ability to plan digital library programmes.
Brief description of the course
The course contains the following main units:
Unit 1. A user-centred digital library.
Unit 2. Target groups and communities of practice regarding the digital library users.
Unit 3. Measuring performance and value of digital libraries.
Unit 4. Allocation of resources, collection management and information mediation in digital libraries. Marketing digital library services, economical and legal aspects of access.
Unit 5. Library services and user training. Developing the digital competencies of users.
Unit 6. Traineeship in digital libraries (5 ECTS).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the goals and value of digital libraries in satisfying users’ needs for information;
- has advanced knowledge on how to build up, develop and manage digital library resources and services;
- s able to analyse and evaluate digital resources and library services;
- manages to associate performance management with their impact to library users;
- is qualified to implement digital library solutions demonstrating corresponding initiative, responsibility, management and teamwork skills.
- is qualified to communicate with different target groups to perform user training in the form of teaching, supervising or in another ways.
