Course aims
Students will achieve accurate pronunciation and differentiation in reading and listening to Chinese Pinyin syllables, tones, vocabulary, and sentences.
Brief description of the course
This course is designed for Chinese learners to help them master pinyin, tones, and pronunciation techniques, improving their accuracy and fluency in spoken Chinese. The course covers: basic pinyin system (initials, finals, and whole-syllable pronunciation), four tones and tone changes (neutral tone, erhua, etc.), common pronunciation challenges (easily confused sounds, pronunciation techniques), practical pronunciation exercises (daily expressions, tongue twisters, short dialogues). Through systematic learning and targeted practice, students will be able to pronounce words correctly, enhance their listening and speaking skills, and build a solid foundation for further Chinese language learning.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- accurately identify articulation points for each Pinyin and pronounce them correctly;
- accurately pronounce and write Pinyin syllables upon hearing them;
- distinguish and pronounce confusing sounds correctly (e.g., an, en, in vs. ang, eng, ing when finals combined with initials; z, s, c vs. zh, ch, sh vs. j, q, x ect.);
- pronounce the four tones and the neutral tone accurately, and differentiate between similar pronunciations when heard;
- read sentences with proper segmentation based on meaning;
- use appropriate intonation when reading different sentence patterns and identify sentence types based on their intonation.
