Course aims
To provide an overview of the central issues and key concepts of Western film theory.
To introduce key texts and authors in film theory.
To expand the horizons of understanding and analysing cinematography.

Brief description of the course
The seminars focus on important texts and authors in film theory both historically and in the present in six thematic blocks: realism, formalism, auteur theory, genre theory, film and ideology, and audience and gaze.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of the central issues and key concepts of Western film theory;
- has worked through a selection of key texts and key authors in Western film theory;
- is able to see the links between film theory and film analysis and apply texts on film theory to better understand films.
