Course aims
The course aims to increase student’s ethical awareness of different audiences as users of digital media and services as one perspective of sustainability in digital life among children, youth and adults. Furthermore, the course expands the ability to think clearly and rationally to make reasonable judgements for decision making and problem solving. It trains the ability to identify and defend against unethical methods of influence, enhances argument analysis skills, improves verbal reasoning skills and expands scientific reasoning skills.
Brief description of the course
The content is explored through the developments in audience and user studies with studies on digital literacies. The course offers insights to conceptual frameworks and research orientations to future in digital spheres from the user’s perspective and digital literacies as learning. While students construct an understanding of the user’s perspective and digital literacies, they will reflect on the potentials of future services, policies and digital productions on the basis of these ethical perspectives and approaches among different user groups.

Students are expected to explore the structure of argumentation and usage of sound, poor and false arguments in real-life public sources; analyse publicly available statements in terms of reason, moral judgement and possible impact; construct coherent and relevant arguments or counter-arguments.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the central concepts and frameworks in audience and user studies with digital literacies;
- has knowledge and skills to analyse programs and policies on digital literacies from the perspective of sustainability;
- understands the significance of the research area in the production of digital media, services and tools from a sustainable perspective;
- can differentiate intuitive and rational thinking;
- can summarise how language can direct or misdirect thinking and differentiate observation, reasonable judgment and opinion;
- can summarise the idea and principles of reasoning, explain the structure and types of arguments and can differentiate strong and weak arguments.
