Course aims
The course increases awareness of the ethics and sustainability considerations in the development and application of digital technology. The course offers approaches and methods for critical and sustainable design practice.
Brief description of the course
The course provides concepts and perspectives for holistically and multidisciplinarily analyzing existing digital technologies and methods for putting the critical perspectives into practice in the design of digital products and services. The course draws theoretical perspectives from ethics of technology, science and technology studies, critical algorithm studies, artificial intelligence ethics, and design perspectives from speculative and critical design, value-sensitive design, design fiction, future studies, responsible design, and human-centered design.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the central concepts and theoretical frameworks related to technoethics, critical algorithm studies, and different facets of sustainability;
- has knowledge and skills to analyse the long-term ethical and societal effects of technological applications and to provide constructive guidance for their development;
- has methodological insight and hands-on experience on design philosophies like speculative design, critical design, inclusive design, and value-sensitive design.
