Course aims
To discuss the function and iconography of the ‘images in the margins’ and of characters regarded as ‘marginal’ in the medieval society.
Brief description of the course
The course will introduce the means that medieval artists used to depict marginal characters, such as representatives of certain ethnic and religious groups (e.g. Jews, Saracens) or of certain occupations (e.g. jesters, executioners). The second point of focus is art in marginal locations. Attention will be paid to the juxtaposition of the good and the bad, to the use of stereotypes in medieval art, and to the world upside-down.
