The artefacts are analyzed in the context of the artists who created them, the creative environment, patronage, distribution etc. The course also discusses the reflections of European influences, the nature and intensity of the contacts, similarities and differences, national versus international, as well as the social factors relevant to the birth and understanding of an artefact.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The module will allow students to analyse the historical meanings of ‘arts’ - in which luxury objects are considered alongside painting, sculpture and architecture - by placing them in the context of early modern Baltic society. As a Special Subject, it will give students the opportunity to study a set of problems in depth, with the aid of primary printed sources and artefacts. It is also intended to develop the ability of students to engage with visual materials in order to broaden and refine their historical analyses. This approach also aims to teach the students how to write a critical essay in the studied field.
