Course aims
To give an overview of the most important philosophical and artistic developments in19th century. To view their mutuality on the social field and create a broad base of understanding of the most important political and cultural ideas of the 19th century.
Brief description of the course
Basing on the art of the 19th century its character and different art movements the era as a whole is contextualized. Both philosophical and social starting points that reflect in art are viewed. In this matter not only the creators (artists, philosophers) are taken under consideration but also the patrons and art buyers are of great interest. In addition to that also the reception and the later influence of the artworks are viewed. The art life and Estonian art are viewed in the context of both European and Russian influences, seeing it as part of the political, cultural and social life.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student is able to distinguish the main philosophical and artistic movements and explain the substance of the most important preoccupations of 19th century. During the course the student develops a general idea of social influences on art in 19th century and sees the incipience of philosophical ideas in different forms of art (visual art, architecture, literature, music). The student’s ability to apprehend visual arts as a source of historical information is developed.
