Course aims
To investigate how military and religious aspects are combined in orders, to analyse the role and significance of such orders.
Brief description of the course
The idea of crusades and the birth of knighthood orders. Their presence in the Holy Land, the Pyrenean Peninsula and Eastern Europe. The internal structure of knighthood orders. Their military aspect. Welfare system. Social background. Knighthood orders becoming fixed in medieval European society (landed property, finances). Problems of medieval knighthood orders: the crusade idea depreciation, the trial of Knight Templars, disagreements between the German Order and Poland. Transformations during the late medieval period.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Oskab seostada vaimulike rüütiordude teket ristisõdade ideestikuga. Valdab erinevate vaimulike rüütiordude tekkemehhanisme ning oskab hinnata nende rolli eri maade arengus. Valdab kaasaja historiograafilisi suundumusi vaimulike rüütiordude fenomeni lahti mõtestamisel.
