Brief description of the course
Colonial history is a significant field of historical research that helps explain the deep structures of historical change, contemporary global problems and possible future developments. The course introduces the principal authors, concepts and theories of (post)colonial studies and applies them to the history of the Baltic Sea region. It examines the principal forms of colonisation and colonialism, postcolonial and neocolonial relations, slavery as both a historical and contemporary problem, and different manifestations of Baltic colonialism. The course also investigates migration processes intertwined with colonialism and the movement of humans and other species within a “more-than-human” world, relating these to environmental history and climate change.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- analyses the development of global colonialism from the perspectives of different historical actors and discusses its ethical and sustainability-related implications;
- is familiar with the principal approaches, concepts and methods of colonial history and applies them critically, ethically and with cultural sensitivity;
- compiles a glossary of specialist terminology;
-analyses historical sources critically and comparatively, taking account of their contexts of power;
- explains the influence of colonial relations on contemporary social structures, memory, heritage and the production of knowledge.
