Brief description of the course
This course examines the history of the early modern provinces of Estonia, Livonia and Courland from the mid-16th century to the end of the 19th century. Alongside a political and administrative perspective (covering the so-called Swedish, Polish, Danish and Russian periods), the subject is also approached through the prism of economic, social and cultural history. It also introduces recent academic issues and debates that have emerged in the field.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the main developments in the political, economic, social and cultural history of Estonia, Livonia and Courland from the mid-16th century to the end of the 19th century;
- is able to explain the development of the Baltic provinces under Swedish, Polish, Danish and Russian rule and identify the major changes and continuities between the different periods of rule;
- understands the connections between the history of the Baltic provinces and broader political, economic, social and cultural developments in the Baltic Sea region and Europe;
- analyses and critically uses historical sources and scholarly literature relating to the period;
- is familiar with the major research questions and historiographical debates concerning the history of the Baltic provinces and is able to compare and critically discuss different scholarly interpretations.
