Course aims
To lay the basis for a deeper understanding of the evolution of Baltic German thought, its most important authors, topics and perspectives within the context of Estonian and German history, science and culture.
Brief description of the course
The lectures give an overview of the birth, development, different topics and importance of Baltic German thought in literature, philosophy, science and arts from the medieval times up to the 20th century. In the seminar we will focus in detail on some main texts, their authors, content and importance.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
After the course the student:
- can define “history of thought”
- is able to differentiate between different epochs in the history of Baltic German thought
- can explain the importance of history of thought for the construction of Baltic German identity
- is able to name the most important Baltic German natural scientists, philosophers, writers, and historians
- is able to describe the linkage between Baltic German history of thought with Estonian and German history and culture
- can verbalize his/her knowledge and analytical statements in a clear and grammatically correct form in written and spoken language
- is proficient in the style and language used in research
