Course aims
This elective subject provides an overview of the development stages of the relations between Finland and Estonia either in the sphere of (academic) cultural ties or military and foreign policy contacts.
Brief description of the course
Earlier background of relations between Estonia and Finland. National awakening and kinfolk unity based on linguistic similarities. Contacts between linguists and national figures. Estonians in Finland at the beginning of the 20th century. Estonian War of Liberation and Finland. Political relations between Finland and Estonia in the 1920-1930’s. Economic relations between Estonia and Finland during the period of independence. Kinfolk movement’s golden age: student contacts, tourism, etc. Establishment of Soviet military bases and Winter War in Finland. Estonia’s addition to the Soviet Union and Finland. Relations during German occupation. Iron Curtain period in 1944-1964. President Kekkonen restores relations between Estonia and Finland. Opening of shipping lines, fresh start for Finnish tourism in Estonia. Period of limited relations in 1965-1988. Finnish TV’s influence on Estonia. New
