Course aims
To provide the students with basic information about the specific features of Estonian culture starting from the 13th century up to the present.
Brief description of the course
The lectures outline the specific features of Estonian culture in its interconnection between environment and the people. The peasant way of living typical to the local context up to the 21st century is discussed. Special features of communication between rulers (Germans) and people of the lower strata are ascertained. The civilizing process among the Estonians that started with the national awakening in the 19th century was interrupted by the Second World War and Soviet occupations. Regaining independence in 1991 introduced new situation with re-evaluation of the understanding of the cultural development of the past.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows main periods and cultural facts; are able to reflect the main factors that influenced the formation of the local culture; knows the names of the most important local cultural historians and their works; is aware of the importance of the political and social factors for the construction of the Estonian culture; can verbalize his or her knowledge and analytical statements in a clear and grammatically correct form both in written and spoken language.
