Course aims
To provide and overview of the development of archaeology, different interpretations of archaeological evidence and methods of treating archaeological material.
Brief description of the course
A deep study on the theory of archaeology and theoretical ways of interpretations. Introduces the traditional, processual and postprocessual approach. An overview of the development of the archaeological thought in the 20th century. Different directions of research and movements before World War 2 – the cultural-historical school, the cultural- ecological school. “The new archaeology”, its criticism on the traditional archaeology. Differences between the traditional and “new archaeology”. Contemporary theoretical movements in archaeology and criticism on the “new archaeology”. Different postprocessual movements – constructivism, neomarxism, poststructuralism, contextual archaeology, feminist archaeology. A study on ethnic relations, identity and their development.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Üliõpilane omab ülevaadet arheoloogia arengust, erinevate arheoloogiliste tõendite interpretatsioonidest ning meetoditest, kuidas arheoloogilist materjali käsitleda.
