Applicants for whom English is not a native language are required to provide proof of their English language proficiency. This is not necessary only in case the applicant has completed his/her B.A. studies fully in English. As proof of proficiency one of the following is accepted:
IELTS  (International English Language Testing System) academic: 5.5
FCE (First Certificate in English): A
CAE (Certificate in Advanced English): C
CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) : C
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign language) paper version: 525, internet based: 70, computer-based: 196 (Tallinn University Code number is: 0449).

Entrance examination has the format of an interview aiming to get to know the applicants, their motivation and eligibility. Part of the interview will focus on the applicant’s projected master’s thesis. The interview is held in English.

Knowledge of central problematics, theories and methodologies of different disciplines in the humanities;
Knowledge and skills to recognise and create interdisciplinary connections;
In-depth knowledge and skills for comparative study and analysis of literatures and cultures, with the integration of theory and methodology of cultural semiotics;
Career profiles for employment in areas that require thorough understanding of different cultural traditions, as well as of the mechanisms of cultural communication and cultural transfer (education; media; cultural diplomacy; government; publishing, translating and editing, etc.);
Knowledge and skills for innovative, responsible and ethically aware professional activity;
Skills to contribute to the field-related debates inside and outside academia;
Competences that allow doctoral studies and research careers;
Skills to study and work in an intercultural environment.

Conceptual premises of the curriculum:
Critically informed and balanced approach to the study of literatures and cultures;
Combined and comparative engagement with literary theory, cultural semiotics and other cultural theoretical approaches;
Facilitation of students’ individual research interests; wide individual freedom, together with guidance, in the choice of electives in accordance with the student’s intellectual needs and interests;
Facilitation of students’ capacity for independent work and for teamwork, critical argumentation and open-minded debate;
Instruction in English in order to prepare students for international careers and to promote the co-operation of students and tutors of various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

which includes passing all compulsory courses and compiling and defending the Master’s thesis. As an additional requirement for students who have been admitted until 2015/2016 the foreign language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages shall correspond to C1 level.
