Course aims

Brief description of the course
The basic concepts of Russian functional syntax form the theoretical foundation of the course, focusing on a systematic approach to syntactic phenomena. Syntax is examined from formal, semantic, and communicative perspectives, highlighting their interrelations and role in language functioning. Various syntactic units are discussed, such as the word form, phrase, simple sentence, and complex sentence, and their structure and functions are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the differential features of constructions, including predicativity, modality, temporality, and personality. The basic models of Russian sentence structure and different definitions of the simple sentence are considered. The nature of the complex sentence, the principles of its classification, and its relation to the text are also examined. Syntactic units are compared across different languages in order to identify both universal and language-specific features. Lectures focus on theoretical issues, while seminars are devoted to the analysis and practical application of specific linguistic material.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- applies the principles and understands the trends of Russian functional grammar;
- identifies and evaluates the major ideas in modern descriptions of Russian syntax;
- analyzes linguistic data using methods of syntactic analysis;
- analyzes sentence structure and identifies sentence constituents, distinguishes types of sentences in Russian;
- applies methods of functional syntax analysis when working with data from different languages;
- supports their analysis with relevant academic and research literature, including classical studies.
