Course aims
This course offers insight into the most burning issues in
International Relations (as a discipline) and world politics (as
praxis).
Brief description of the course
This course offers insight into the most burning issues in International Relations (as a discipline) and world politics (as praxis). The course starts with asking what do we need to think and see certain issues as important in global politics. The course will centre issues such as decolonising International Relations/the University, it critically reflects on the multiple epistemic injustices extant in IR/ir. It is curious about the voices and knowledge in the Global South; the place of nonviolence and protests in IR; as always it looks to issues of war & peace (Ukraine, Palestine, Syria and Afghanistan; UNSCR 1325 Women, Peace and Security agenda); and it is cognisant of the ways inequality and the climate change continue to shape our realities to very different degrees. The course ends with the invitation to to imagine otherwise and thus find answers to the question: what can we do to change the world?
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a systematic understanding and knowledge of what it means to know contemporary issues of International Relations;
- is able to analyse, reflect and write about contemporary issues in IR;
- has an efficient grasp of how to link IR theories and perspectives to thinking & analysing global politics.
