Course aims
To give the teacher an overview of the development of children with a different cultural background and bilingual children, with an emphasis on speech development/acquiring a second language. To help the teacher to acknowledge and analyse development and learning problems arising from poor language skills. To shape the teacher’s readiness to adjust the studies based on the students with different cultural and language background.
Brief description of the course
Definition, typology, researching bilingualism (multilingualism).
2. The development of a bilingual child.
3. Factors that impact a bilingual child’s speech/linguistic development.
4. Assessing/monitoring the development of a multilingual child.
5. Other (bi)lingualism and special education.
6. Estonian legislation related to teaching foreign language children.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the differences of a monolingual and bilingual child’s speech development as well as speech creation and perception;
- has theoretical knowledge of the difficulties of students with different cultural and language background when acquiring a second language;
- distinguishes language usage mistakes caused by the impact of another language (underspeech) from children’s typical mistakes;
- knows the appropriate means and material for supporting the speech development/acquiring a second language in preschool age and the possibilities of study aids for school children;
- understands a bilingual child’s speech creation association with academic success and with special needs related to the peculiarities of cognitive processes;
- knows the more important possibilities to support students with different cultural and language background in the classroom.
