Course aims
To provide an overview of the development of bilingual children, with an emphasis on speech development/acquisition of a second language. To introduce educational opportunities for children of other nationalities. To teach to recognise and analyse development and learning problems arising from poor language skills.
Brief description of the course
Definition of bilingualism, typology, research. Development of a bilingual child. Factors influencing the development of bilingual children’s speech. Interference. Estonian-Russian bilingualism. Legislation on teaching non-Estonian children in Estonia. Critical analysis of the educational system of teaching non-Estonian children in Estonia. Other bilingualism and special education. Drawing up individual curricula for non-Estonian children.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the differences between a bilingual and a monolingual child's speech development, motor-speech and perception;
- can distinguish language errors due to the influence of a second language from the speech defects of children with a speech disorder (speech impairment);
- knows appropriate techniques and materials to support speech development/acquisition of a second language at pre-school age and opportunities for struggling students;
- can support multilingualism and multiculturalism in the Estonian education system.
