Course aims
The course aim is first to refresh and deepen the student’s knowledge on human sensory systems including visual, auditory, tactile and other modalities; multisensory perception and human attention principles. Using this knowledge, students will critically analyze and shape multimodal experiences delivered by media and digital games trough assignments.
Brief description of the course
Topics to be covered in the course include (but not limited to):
- Visual perception
- Auditory perception
- Tactile perception and proprioception
- Other senses (olfactory, kinesthetic)
- Imagery and individual sensory differences
- Peripersonal space
- Action-perception loop
- Sensory substitution
- Cross-modal perception
- Attention (selected/divided, spatial/temporal)
- Inattention blindness
- Fill-in effects and gestalt principles
- Top down and bottom up processes
- Place illusion (presence), body illusion and extension (out-of-body experience)
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is aware of the - main principles of human attention and perception;
- is able to apply this knowledge in critical analysis of existing media content including digital games
- is able to apply this knowledge in design/creation of media content including digital games.
