Course aims
To introduce history, politics and society of Republic of Korea from the point of view of political events and social issues.
Brief description of the course
History of Republic of Korea will be covered from the Opening port period (19th century) to nowadays with a focus on democratization and industrialization processes of the society and the issues related to domestic and foreign policy of the country. Political and social problems in Republic of Korea will be introduced and students will discuss about them. Political conflicts between Republic of Korea and other East Asian countries will be introduced and students will analyze the causes of them and will find the solutions of them. In addition, history, ideology and reality of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) will be briefly covered.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to explain the modern history of Republic of Korea;
- is able to explain the cause and progress of political and societal events in Republic of Korea;
- is able to analyze the present-day political and societal events in Republic of Korea and suggest solutions for those;
- is able to analyze the present-day international political conflicts between Republic of Korea and other East Asian countries and suggest solutions for those.
