Course aims
To enable a basic overview of relations between langauge and society, language variation, individual and societal multilingualism, contacts of Estonian language, multilingual communication, connections between language and identity and various views on identity
Brief description of the course
Aims of sociolinguistics. Language variation and change (syncrhonic, diachronic, territorial, individusal social etc). Standardization. Norm and periphery. Multilingual society. Bilingualism and diglossia. Societal and individual multilinugalism. Evolution of views on multilingualsim. Contacts of Estonian language. Relativity of „mother tongue“ concept. Emergence of new identities. Multiple identity. Linguistic repertoire Linguistic creativity. Styles and ethnolects.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- know main concept of sociolinguistics
- is familiar with treatments of multilingualism;
- realize the complexity of links between language and identity;
- has a basic understanding of the emergence of new identities and multiple identities;
- has a general idea about contacts of Estonian language.
