Course aims
The course aims: giving basic knowledge of Chinese grammar, pronunciation and writing system, including knowledges about contemporary Chinese culture.
Brief description of the course
During the course students acquire readiness to engage in simple everyday conversation that helps to manage well in real everyday situations, such as greetings and introducing oneself, in a shop or restaurant etc. Also the course introduces contemporary Chinese culture and manners building the basis for further studies of Chinese language. During the course the students are supposed to learn approximately 150 characters and 300 new words.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- forms simple Chinese sentences using learned vocabulary and grammatical structures and uses them in spoken and written communication;
- reads short and simple Chinese texts and uses learned greetings and polite expressions in everyday communication to introduce themselves and exchange simple information;
- follows simple instructions in Chinese and communicates in common practical situations, including asking for help, ordering food, and exchanging simple information with service staff and officials;
- applies learned knowledge of Chinese language and culture in simple and familiar communicative situations, taking into account basic linguistic and cultural conventions.

Additional information
The volume of the individual work is 7 hours a week, or 1 hour a day. Total for the semester is 100 hours.
1) Students are required to memorise new words and finish all the homework that teacher gives in class.
2) Students will be assigned to finish 10 small presentations on given topics.
3) In case student has difficulty in pronouncing certain Chinese Pinyin, additional training materials on pronunciation will be given for practice.
4) For memorisation of the Chinese characters, students are required to write them repeatedly in their own workbook
