Course aims
The purpose of this course is to provide theoretical knowledge of the principles of international private law, to explain the key-notions of international private law and the development of the main institutes of international private law. The course will give an overview regarding the implementation of rules of international private law and teaches to analyse it; collision norms are highlighted. International efforts in order to harmonize/unify respective substantial norms of national laws will also be dealt with. Special attention will be paid to the development of the legal systems of the Member States of the European Union.
Brief description of the course
The course will consider the terminology, system and general principles of international private law as well as the norms of international private law in Estonia. Attention is also paid to the Hague convention, to other international agreements and relevant acts of the European Union.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and understands the system of international private law, its basic terms, foundational principles, set of existing conflict norms, theories, development trends and contemporary problems;
- understands the different branches of international private law and their interconnections and can interpret the relevant legal acts of the European Union;
- can raise and analyse legal issues with regard to international private law;
- can use the sources and knowledge of private international law in interpreting and applying legal norms;
- is able to navigate in the information regarding private international law.
