Course aims
Provide knowledge about the relationship between behavior, health, and diseases. The student knows basic concepts of modern epidemiology, the most common study designs, and interprets epidemiological indicators. The student is able to critically assess epidemiological data and research and interpret results. The student is able to understand epidemiological studies and to find possibilities for use of research findings in the development of health recommendations and clinical guidelines. To develop skills to analyze behavioral health risks and modify them.
Brief description of the course
The most common diseases and their connections with health behavior and well-being. Principles of modern epidemiology and study designs. Descriptive surveys, cross-sectional surveys, cohort studies, case-control surveys, and experimental surveys. Causality and complexity of risk and protective factors, measuring the relationship between the disease and exposure. Systematic reviews and meta-analysis.The study questions, use of registers, databases, and systematic reviews for deriving evidence for clinical guidelines or health recommendations. The course includes independent work to critically assess the evidence, and use evidence for health recommendations. Lifestyle counseling by using motivational interviewing techniques.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows for measuring relationships between health and behavior basics of modern epidemiology, and study designs;
- can prepare health-related research questions and is able to critically evaluate research results;
- can use evidence for making evidence-based health recommendations and clinical guidelines;
- is able to analyze behavioural health risks and to use motivational interviewing techniques to their modification.
