Course aims
The goals of this course are to acquire the knowledge about different theories of leisure and recreation and to support acquirement of knowledge and skills that are necessary for career planning in vocational speciality.
Brief description of the course
Study of the philosophical, social, and cultural foundations of leisure and recreation. Introduction to the main concepts and theories of leisure. Conceptualizing leisure: leisure as time, as activity, as a state of being. Leisure and its relationship to work. Overview of the relationships between leisure and work in history. Components of life-space. Classifications of the leisure activities. Recreation concepts and main theories. Recreation as experience. Recreation as institution. Operating philosophies in recreation. Overview of application of disciplines in recreation and their interdisciplinary relationship. Fields of work and occupations. Vocational system and vocational qualifications in the field of leisure in Estonia. Competence framework in specialization, CV, logbook. Consulting in recreation management curriculum. Good practice in the field of occupation (guest speakers).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to identify main theoretical approaches to explore and understand leisure and recreation;
- define the main content of leisure and recreation in one’s own life and according to the recreation and leisure profession in modern western society and as described in the literature throughout history;
- know opportunities of specialized field of occupation and vocational qualifications in field of work.
- expain interdependency betwen curriculum and vocational system and uncover important aspects in the field of occupation.
