Course aims
The objective of the course is to support the understanding of students from other fields about the function of social system as balancer of society and create preconditions for acquiring knowledge about the tasks of social work as a profession in the context of theoretical basis and methods and about the historical development of social work in the world and in Estonia.
Brief description of the course
Social work nature and tasks in society. Philosophy of the profession: social work values, humanistic starting point in social work. Professional ethics, confidentiality and responsibility. Main concepts: social protection, social work, social welfare, social insurance, social services, etc. Historical development of social work in the world. Historical development of social work and welfare in Estonia (from 13th century to present day). Theoretical basis and methods of social work. Social work context and social work process: concept of intervention, methods of intervention. Protection and empowerment of the client. Organisation of services in welfare - welfare mix. Method of case management. Networking. Competence of social worker and reflective social work.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge of social work professional terminology;
- has knowledge of social work philosophical bases and principles of professional activity in society;
- has ability to distinguish main methods of social work and theoretical concepts;
- has skills to develop networking, compile environment maps and knowledge/skills for client work with different target groups.
