Course aims
Provide an overview of psychic disorders prevalent in children and develop students’ observation skills and systemic thinking in order to see causal relations in the development of different psychic and behavioural disorders.
Brief description of the course
During the course the psycho-analytical approach to child’s development and psychic and behavioural disorders prevalent in children are introduced in parallel. An important part of the course is observation of an infant or toddler and seminars related to it. An opportunity to observe a child under 5 years old is recommended to be found already at the beginning of the course. The observed child may not be related to the student closely or daily.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the main principles of child’s psycho-analytical development and is able to formulate the most important changes and possible difficulties related to different periods of child’s development;
- can name the most important groups of psychic disorders prevalent in children and youth with main characteristics of every disorder;
- acquires the skill by the end of the course to neutrally observe a child in his/her natural environment, describe what is happening to the child, understand in the framework of what was studied during the course the possible stage of child’s psychological development together with its challenges and analyse one’s experience as an observer during the entire observation process.
